Wetlands in Netherlands at National Parc the Biesbosch and wetlands in Benin? Our Benin specialist Alexia Guebels explains why they are so important. Your participation to the Packraft trail helps to protect these valuable pieces of land!
Our project in the wetlands of Athiémé in Benin is a win-win situation for both the ecosystem and the local communities. Wetlands are threatened by overuse of water for irrigation. Hence, Join For Water is providing access to irrigation water via groundwater by drilling boreholes. In addition, Join For Water has equipped producers with irrigation systems to use groundwater more efficiently. The wetlands, being protected from water overexploitation, can provide their ecosystem services such as flood regulation, recharging of the aquifer and habitat for fish. Having access to these valuable services significantly increases the resilience of the rural population living in the floodplain of the Mono River.
