Samenvatting:

The objective of this study is to illustrate how the sustainability of sanitation systems, in three different contexts, can be assessed using an integrated comparative approach. The perspective used for all examples is that of the municipality. The comparative approach outlined in this report could further be used as one integrated part in decision-making for future sanitation investments in the municipal setting. The first case, from Sweden, illustrates how criteria could be used for the upgrading of on-site sanitation outside municipal wastewater treatment jurisdiction. The second, from South Africa, illustrates how the use of criteria could guide decisions on sanitation alternatives in low-cost housing projects. The third example is from Mexico and highlights how the use of criteria could support strategic decisionmaking processes around whether to connect or not to connect to a future wastewater treatment plant.
