Integrated Water Resources Management

Join For Water considers Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) to be the global framework to which all actions must adhere.

The sustainable usage of water resources is IWRM’s main concern. Water serves many purposes: there is water to drink, to clean, to irrigate. It is used in crafts and industry. And of course, nature and its ecological systems would collapse without it. Depending on its use, water involves a variety of actors and consumers. The art is to attune the needs of all users, including nature. Each problem related to water is also subject to multiple factors: these may be technical or economical, but social, cultural and political dimensions also need to be taken into account.

In order to avoid friction and conflict, any intervention regarding water supplies also needs to take into account its effects on downstream areas. Moreover, insight into the present situation is not enough; one must also consider future generations who will need water in sufficient quantity and of proper quality. The IWRM approach addresses all of these issues.

Today, IWRM is considered the most appropriate method to achieve a sustainable water policy. As such, it is best to intervene within an entire basin, which can mean an entire river system or water table. Although Join For Water does not work directly on such large scales, we can nevertheless successfully apply the methods and principles of IWRM in subsidiary basins formed by smaller rivers and water tables. In order to fully implement IWRM, we rely on the services and expertise of specialised partners.

As water is a common good, everyone is entitled to participate in its management. A management committee including representatives of the various water users, local authorities and service providers, is in charge of the entire IWRM process. Only thus can all aspects be taken into account and diverging interests be reconciled and conflicts avoided. Last but not least, climate change, with its unpredictable, varying manifestations and ever more extreme phenomena, forms a formidable new challenge to IWRM and future sustainable access to water.
